Why Window Tint is Essential in Qatar

In a country where summer cabin temperatures can exceed 70°C in direct sun, window tint is not cosmetic — it is functional protection. A quality film rejects a large share of solar heat before it enters the cabin, which means cooler seats and steering wheel, less strain on your air conditioning, lower fuel consumption, and slower fading of leather and dashboard plastics. Tint also blocks more than 99% of UV radiation, protecting both your skin on long commutes and your car's interior trim. The difference between a cheap dyed film and a quality ceramic or carbon film is dramatic in Qatar: cheap films fade to purple, bubble in the heat, and reject far less infrared energy.

What Qatar's Traffic Regulation Actually Says

Two published texts govern window tint, and both are on Al Meezan, Qatar's official legal portal. Article 69 of the Traffic Law (Decree-Law 19 of 2007) bans any means of concealing a vehicle's glass without a written permit from the licensing authority. Article 75 of the law's Executive Regulations (Minister of Interior Decision 6 of 2010) sets the rule: the Traffic Department may permit an owner to fit tint film once the fee is paid, the film must be the shaded type and not reflective, and it is limited to the glass of the rear side doors. The front side doors, the windscreen and the rear screen are excluded. Article 76 allows film on all of a vehicle's glass, again with a written permit, in only two cases: a medical report from the competent medical authority (for the period it sets, and personal to the applicant), or vehicles of certain ministries, government bodies and diplomatic missions. Neither text states a percentage or a VLT figure.

Why Everyone Quotes a Different Percentage

Ask around Doha and you will hear 10%, 20%, 30% or 50%. Those numbers are not in the published regulation, and the guides that quote them disagree with each other. Some mean darkness and others mean light passing through (VLT), so the same number can describe opposite films. We found no Ministry of Interior page that publishes a percentage, although enforcement practice or a later instruction may exist that is not published. So treat any figure, including one from a tint shop, as unverified until the Traffic Department or Metrash confirms it for your vehicle. An earlier version of this guide quoted 20% (80% VLT) for front windows and fines of QR 1,000 to 3,000; we removed both on 3 November 2026 because we could not trace them to a published text.

How to Get the Permit (QR 20 on MOI or Metrash)

Hukoomi, the government services portal, lists this as the Glass Tinting Permit for Vehicles. On the Ministry of Interior e-services portal: log in with your smart card, choose a personal or company transaction, then open Traffic Services, Vehicles, Glass Tinting Permit. Pick your vehicle from the list or enter the plate number and vehicle type, choose collection from the Traffic Department or delivery by Qatar Post, then pay by card. The service fee is QR 20, Qatar Post delivery costs extra, and Hukoomi says the service runs immediately and is also available in the Metrash app (page last updated January 2021). The permit comes as a new vehicle permit that includes the tint permission. If you need film beyond the rear side doors on medical grounds, Article 76 asks for a report from the competent medical authority; ask the Traffic Department how to submit it before fitting anything.

Penalties: What the Law Says

Article 95 of the Traffic Law (amended in 2015) sets imprisonment of one week to one year, a fine of QR 3,000 to QR 10,000, or either, for breaches of the articles it lists, and Article 69 is on that list. Article 88 lets the Director of Traffic order a vehicle held for up to 90 days when any means is used to conceal its glass without a written permit. Some guides quote lower fines (QR 500 to QR 1,000), which may reflect what is applied in practice; we could not verify them. A FAHES official said in 2016 that tinting the windscreen and the rear screen is not allowed (The Peninsula). This is a summary by a car care supplier, not legal advice: check Metrash or the Traffic Department before you fit film.

VLT, IR Rejection and Other Numbers Explained

Tint shopping comes with jargon. VLT (visible light transmission) is the percentage of visible light that passes through: a 70%–80% VLT film is nearly clear, whereas a 5% VLT film is limousine-dark. Heat rejection numbers split into TSER (total solar energy rejected) and IR rejection (the infrared portion you feel as burning skin heat). Because ceramic particles target infrared rather than visible light, a lighter ceramic film can still reject a lot of heat, so a darker film is not automatically a cooler one.
